The Alkaline Diet

Thealkaline diet is the most raved fad diet this year. With celebrities Gwyneth Paltrow, Kirsten Dunst and Victoria Beckham raving about it’s effects (just look at their amazing bodies) no wonder dieters are wanting to try it. This diet has been the underdog of the dieting industry for a while but the latest book ‘Honestly Healthy Alkaline Programme’ by chef Natasha Corrett and nutritionist Vicki Edgson, it has become a cookbook on every dieters self.

What is the Alkaline Diet?

Well the ‘Honestly Healthy Alkaline programme’ consists of you eating alkaline foods to keep your bodies PH between 7.35 and 7.45. Our stomach is acidic (PH 1.35-3.5) as this is how we digest our food, but the diet is designed to balance out your PH level, this in affect is meant to improve your overall health. The diet is vegetarian based consisting of fresh vegetables and some fresh fruit, nuts, grains and soy products.

It is believed that heavily acidic diets unbalance the bodies PH, promoting the loss of essential minerals. this imbalance makes people prone to illness and gaining weight.

The alkaline diet is healthy, says Marjorie Nolan, RD, an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman.”It’s a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, plenty of water, avoiding processed foods, coffee, and alcohol, which are all recommendations for a generally healthy diet anyway”.

Here are a few examples of foods you can eat in the alkaline diet:

-sweet potatoes

-mushrooms

-grapes

-avocados

-tofu
